125: Joel McKerrow - A Conversation with a Poet and Creative

“A fish in a bowl doesn’t know that it’s wet.” Joel McKerrow believes that naming the water we’ve been swimming around in is part of growing up and there’s a whole world out there for us to get lost in!

Joel is a touring, performance poet whose life is the confluence of creativity and identity work.

Join the conversation as Joel takes us on a journey of re-weaving–taking the unraveled threads of our lives and seeing them woven back together as a “garment for any season of faith and doubt and wrestle and struggle.” Joel’s book, Woven: A Faith for the Dissatisfied is about his journey toward Jesus–about “losing a Jesus that was way too small and looked too much like me, to a Jesus that began to mesmerize me.”

Together, we’ll explore these three critical movements that will invite you to consider a faith that can sustain the storms of life:

• The Sculpted Self
• The Unraveled Self
• The Woven Self

The invitation to inner work is not for the faint of heart, but it is one that “re-members” us and our story toward FullCircle living if we allow ourselves to move forward through being sculpted, unraveled, and woven.

To complement the journey, Joel’s creative exhibition, “HUMAN” brings all nine Enneagram Types to life through poetry, art, music, and more.

Joel McKerrow is an award-winning writer, speaker, educator, artist, creativity specialist and, having performed for hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world, is one of Australia’s most successful, internationally touring, performance poets. Based out of Melbourne, Australia he is the Artist Ambassador for the aid and development organization ‘TEARFUND Australia’ and was the co-founder of community arts organization, 'The Centre for Poetics and Justice' (2010-2013). Joel was the third ever Australian representative at the Individual World Poetry Slam Championships in the USA and is a highly sought-after speaker at conferences and festivals all over the world. He has four published books and four spoken word/music albums, is a successful play-wright, is a co-founder/host of the The Deep Place: On Creativity and Spirituality Podcast and teaches on staff at the Melbourne Young Writers Studio.
